Rick Mantei reflects on the life and legacy of his dear friend, Maj. Gen. Thomas Frederick Rew (USAF, Ret.), who passed away on October 12, 2025, at the age of 103.

A decorated pilot, leader, and patriot, Maj. Gen. Rew devoted his life to aviation and service. From flying B-47s and B-52s to commanding missions through World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam, he embodied the courage and commitment that define America’s greatest generation.

Rick shared a deep respect and friendship with Gen. Rew—two aviators connected by a lifelong love of flight and country. “He lived with purpose every single day,” Rick recalls. “Gen. Rew was a hero, a mentor, and a gentleman. The world is better because he was in it.”

Rick honors Gen. Rew’s extraordinary 103 years of faith, family, and service, remembering him not only as a remarkable Air Force leader but as a humble man who inspired everyone fortunate enough to know him.
