Fly For Foundations at Columbia Metropolitan Airport
On August 16, 2025, aviation history and community spirit came together as Colonel Rick Mantei hosted the Fly For Foundations charity event at Columbia Metropolitan Airport.
Held at Eagle Aviation, the event featured authentic World War II-era aircraft, including the iconic PT-17 Stearman biplane, which once trained legendary pilots during the war. Families, aviation enthusiasts, and veterans gathered to experience the thrill of flight while supporting local causes that strengthen communities across South Carolina.
A special highlight of the day was the presence of 99-year-old WWII veteran Bruce Cook, who served as a turret gunner on the B-17 Flying Fortress. Though not flying, Cook attended the event to share stories from his time in the service and to reflect on the sacrifices of his generation. His presence underscored the deep connection between aviation’s past and the freedoms enjoyed today.
Proceeds from the event benefited six nonprofits making an impact in the region: Sole Stepping, Foodshare South Carolina, Midlands Orphan Relief, Carolina Wildlife Care Center, Home Works of America, and Final Victory Animal Shelter.
For Rick, showcasing these historic planes is more than a passion—it’s a mission. “These are more than just airplanes,” Mantei said. “They trained heroes, and today they’re helping us honor veterans while giving back to the community.”
The event not only raised funds but also inspired younger generations to connect with aviation and its role in history. With strong community support, Rick and the Mantei Charitable Fund are already preparing for the next Fly For Foundations event in October 2025.
