Rick Mantei and Daughter Sara Run the 2025 Firecracker 5K in Support of Tunnels to Towers

This Fourth of July weekend, Col. Rick Mantei and his daughter Sara laced up their running shoes to participate in the 2025 Firecracker 5K on Hilton Head Island, showing their support for the Tunnels to Towers Foundation. Known as Hilton Head Island’s oldest and largest race, the Firecracker 5000 draws runners from all over to celebrate Independence Day and honor American heroes.

A portion of the proceeds and all donations from the event go directly to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation—a remarkable organization born in the aftermath of 9/11. Their mission is to provide mortgage-free homes to Gold Star families and the children of fallen first responders, as well as to build specially adapted smart homes for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders. They also work to combat veteran homelessness and ensure that America never forgets the sacrifice made on September 11, 2001.

For Rick Mantei, a decorated veteran himself, participating in this event alongside Sara was more than just a race. It was an opportunity to honor the legacy of America’s heroes, support an incredible cause, and set an example of service and remembrance for the next generation. Moments like these reflect Rick’s ongoing commitment to giving back, uplifting veterans and their families, and ensuring we always remember the true meaning of sacrifice and freedom.
